ICER AIR 2005

Big Air in September

ICER wanted to hold a big air competition in the streets of San Francisco to celebrate Johnny Moseley's birthday and, of course, drum up publicity. Unfortunately local activists (i.e. whining Marina residents) blocked the original planned date despite the event having obtained permits from the city. The whiners claimed the event would interfere with children's education at a nearby school (I think the budget deficit and school closures are a slightly bigger concern), prevent locals from getting in and out of their driveways (um, snow melts and can be shoveled away, plus they block off the street for the annual SF Grand Prix cycling race), and would destroy the sanctity of a Tibetan temple (ok I can concede the plan of having a beer tent right next to the temple may have been a bad idea). After more safety reviews (it's a big air competition, it's not inherently safe), more permitting, and basically just jumping through hoops, the event went ahead. So on a very hot September 28th day, thousands of San Franciscans including myself skipped work to check out the ICER Big Air Competition with the beautiful bay and Golden Gate Bridge as a backdrop.
